Belgrade Plaza Car Park Now Open!

An 83-year-old motorcar, manufactured on the site of the new Belgrade Plaza, was the guest of honour at the launch of the development’s stunning new £30 million multi-storey car park.

The Cluley 10/20 was made by the Coventry-based company in 1923 at its Well Street factory and is now part of the collection at the Coventry Transport Museum in the city centre.

But it was given a rare outdoor airing to commemorate the reopening of the Belgrade Plaza Car Park –formerly Leigh Mills – signifying the completion of the first phase of Belgrade Plaza.

The car park has nine new vehicle decks which means it now offers 1,100 spaces making up for the number of spaces lost when the later phases of Belgrade Plaza are built on the current Bond Street Car Park.

Oakmoor Deeley has also given the car park a dramatic glass tower with a stunning lighting effect as well as a three 21-person lifts, toilets and a welcoming lobby.

As well as being disabled-friendly, well-lit, freshly painted and secure, it is also the only city centre car park that is directly accessible straight from the ring road.

It opens to the public on Monday, October 30th and will be securely operated by CV One, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Coventry’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Shabbir Ahmed, was one of 80 guests at the launch.

Mike Jones, of Oakmoor Deeley, said: “People may think that there is a lot of fuss over the opening of a car park. But this is more than just a car park.

“It marks the end of the first phase of this magnificent development and, more excitingly, the beginning of the next phase.

“We wanted a car park that would set the tone for the rest of Belgrade Plaza – something that would bring a great sense of pride, that would come to life and have a positive impact on the environment. I believe that has been achieved.

“This is the finest multi-storey car park in the Midlands and will be extremely popular with visitors to the city centre 24 hours a day.”

Work on the next phase at Belgrade Plaza including hotels, bars, restaurants, casino and apartments will start in January and is expected to take around two years to complete.

A number of operators have already signed up to the development including Radisson Edwardian which will open a four-star hotel.

Premier Travel Inn has agreed to be budget hotel operators while Metro Bar and Grill and Gala Casino are also on board.

The Lord Mayor Councillor Ahmed said: “Seeing the Cluley car was a way of celebrating the city’s heritage.

“And with the opening of this new car park we have been given a chance to see Coventry city centre’s future.”

Carillion - one of the leading support services and construction companies in the UK – carried out the work on the Belgrade Plaza car park on behalf of Oakmoor Deeley.

Shortland Horne and Wright Silverwood are agents at the development.
