Judges Present Special Award to Belgrade Plaza

A “new” Coventry car park has landed a prestigious prize.

The Belgrade Plaza Car Park, which only opened in October, has won the Judges Special Award at the British Park Awards 2007, held in London.

The building – which is part of the £130 million mixed-use development transforming the area between the ring road and the Belgrade Theatre – has seen a massive improvement and extension to an existing car park.

Developer Oakmoor Deeley added an additional nine vehicle decks and the car park now offers; 1,100 spaces, a dramatic glass tower with a stunning lighting effect, three 21-person scenic lifts, high quality toilets and a welcoming lobby.

As well as being people-friendly, well-lit and attended 24 hrs, it is also the only city centre car park that has direct access to and from the Ring Road.

Kieran Leahy, a director of Oakmoor Deeley, said: “When we heard we had been nominated for Best New Car Park and were short listed as one of five, we were very pleased, particularly as the Car Park had only been opened for a matter of months.

“But to be given the Judges’ Special Award for 2007 was just fantastic both for Belgrade Plaza and for Coventry itself.

“The judges described the end result as a feat of engineering skill and said that taking an award-winning car park and doubling it in size was an epic undertaking.

“The award is a testament to the efforts of our professional team and our contractors who worked very hard to complete of the first phase of our development to time and budget.

“CV One manage the car park for us and its team were instrumental in obtaining this award. Its input into the design and their friendly, efficient service has been vital to customer satisfaction and the car park’s success.

“Our aim was to give the people of Coventry top quality 24-hour secure parking accessed directly from the ring road and we have certainly achieved that objective.”

The car park is the first phase of Belgrade Plaza which will include two hotels, a casino, bars, offices, restaurants and apartments. It has been designed to make a new living, leisure and cultural quarter for the city.

The scheme is being showcased this week to an international audience at the MIPIM property show in France.

Councillor Dave Arrowsmith, Cabinet Member for Urban Regeneration and Regional Planning, said: “Property awards such as this can only enhance the reputation of the city and we are delighted.

“We have worked very closely with Oakmoor Deeley and believe Coventry is getting a scheme which will improve the city centre for people who live here and for those who visit. Hopefully there will be more awards to come.”
