The anticipated opening of the new public space at the multi-million pound Belgrade Plaza development has been performed by local people. A group of residents, invited by developers Oakmoor Deeley, have taken part in the first walk-through of the new Belgrade Square, adjacent to the Belgrade Theatre. The site, which has been undergoing transformation work for the past 18 months, includes a number of eye-catching features including a granite water feature, tiered lawns, stylish public seating and a mall connecting the square with the award-winning Belgrade Plaza car-park. Road improvement works have also been made at the site and two historic statues were reincorporated into the square after being refurbished The project has cost about £1 million and has seen the square double in size. It was developed by Oakmoor Deeley in collaboration with Coventry City Council, Belgrade Theatre and local interest groups. As a result of the work, Belgrade Plaza – the £150 million entertainment and leisure quarter - will now be better linked to the city centre. Peter Deeley, of Oakmoor Deeley, said: “It is fantastic to see the next major stage in the exciting Belgrade Plaza development come to fruition. “The aim was to create a public space of the highest quality that everyone could come and enjoy, and I think we have achieved that. “We thought it wholly appropriate that people from nearby communities and companies should take the first steps through the square. “This is a very visual aspect of the work we are undertaking at the site and it is great for the public to be able to see the good progress that we are making.” Councillor Gary Ridley, Cabinet Member (City Development), said: “This new square is really impressive and I am sure it will be enjoyed by everyone. It really complements both the Belgrade Plaza development and the Belgrade Theatre and it’s a fine example of a quality public space.” The Belgrade will now be able to have café seating out in the square and use it for public performances. As well as the Premier Inn which opened last month, Belgrade Plaza will also feature a Radisson Edwardian hotel, Bella Italia, Metro Bar & Grill, Pizza Express, a Gala Casino and 64 apartments. ![]() Ninety-five-year-old Olive Green from Bonds Hospital with chef Tony Jackson from the Town Wall Tavern and Katie Wood from Coventry Foyer, along with Richard Boland (Belgrade Theatre) and Alison Fletcher (Premier Inn) experience the new square for the first time.
