| Multi-storey car park to temporarily close | ||

A multi-storey car park is to temporarily close next weekend as part of a £100 million regeneration project breathing new life into Coventry city centre. Leigh Mills Car Park is to be extended to offer 500 extra spaces to make up for the eventual lost parking on Bond Street, which forms the centre piece of the prestigious Belgrade Plaza development. The car park will close at 8pm on Saturday November 12 and is expected to be closed for about a year to allow the five-storey extension to be completed. Bond Street and the Bond Street annex car park will remain open, with its two entrances close to Upper Well Street and Hill Street. The new 150-space Annex 2 car park, off Ryley Street, next to Leigh Mills Car Park, will also remain open. Work started on the Belgrade Plaza earlier this year with the demolition of Coronet House, to create the temporary Annex 2 car park. Developer Oakmoor Deeley is behind the £100 million regeneration scheme which will transform a 3.5 acre site between the Belgrade Theatre and Junction 9 of the ring road. It will create a new gateway to the city centre with new apartments, retail and leisure space as well as hotels and a casino. About 1,000 jobs are also expected to be created through the ambitious scheme which is set to be completed in 2008. Mike Jones, of Oakmoor Deeley, said: “Closing Leigh Mills is an unfortunate but necessary measure to ensure the expansion and improvement work is carried out as quickly and safely as possible. “But it is also another step closer to the completion of the Belgrade Plaza development, which will provide a huge advance in the city’s leisure offer as well as continuing the major regeneration that is taking place in Coventry.” Tony Golding, Car Parks and Facilities Manager at CV One, the not-for-profit company which manages the city centre, asked people to be patient while the work was carried out. “We are confident that there is sufficient alternative parking and that is why the Annex 2 car park was created to help off-set the temporary closure of Leigh Mills. “It is unfortunate the closure is to happen just before the busy Christmas period but of course the sooner the car park closes the sooner it will open again. “Every effort will be made to ensure the car park will reopen as soon as possible and we would like to thank people for their cooperation until this happens.” Free maps of all city centre car parks are available from Tourist Information Centre More or by visiting CV One’s website www.visitcoventry.co.uk |
