A kaleidoscope of colourful and innovative creations launched a national design competition in Coventry.
MAD UK is set to attract hundreds of designers and artists from across Europe to create extravagant sculptural costumes.

The Belgrade Theatre has organised the competition along with Coventry University following the success of last year’s pilot project.

The theme for MAD UK 2006 – whose sponsors include Belgrade Plaza and the Heart of England Co-op – is Fair Trade to celebrate the city achieving its status and the competition is split into two categories with £1,000 up for grabs for both winners and £500 for the runners-up.

Children from Coventry’s Sidney Stringer School showed their artistic abilities by creating head wear at the launch of MAD UK 2006 in the Grand Café at the Belgrade Theatre.

Coventry breakdance group Kombat Breakers entertained the audience and some of last year’s entries were on display to encourage individuals or teams of designers or costume makers to enter.

Jane Hytch, from the Belgrade Theatre, said this was a unique design competition open to anyone aged 16 and over.

“This competition is dedicated to creativity, extravagance and recycling ideas and materials which is why it is ideal to base this year’s theme on the notion of Fair Trade and its products,” she said.

“Once all the designs have been judged, the finalists will have six weeks to make up their designs and the winning costumes will be choreographed and judged in a live show at the Ricoh Arena on March 26 which coincides with the end of Fair Trade Fortnight.

“The audience at the final will also be invited to create and wear headgear inspired by the themes to encourage interaction.

“Last year’s competition was a tremendous success with designers entering from throughout the UK and I am sure it will be even better in 2006.”

The Tutti Frutti under-19s section is encouraging entrants to be inspired by Fair Trade apples, avocadoes, bananas, citrus fruits, coconuts, mangoes, pears and pineapples.
The Wild Weather category is for artists aged 19 and over to take inspiration from the elements and extreme weather conditions.

To download an entry form, log on to www.belgrade.co.uk and designs must be submitted by January 30.
