A Coventry choir hitting the right notes
A Coventry choir is hitting the right notes for this month’s spectacular Belgrade Theatre production of The Mysteries 2006.

The Soulful Gospel Choir has been rehearsing since mid-June at the Hope Centre in Sparkbrook Street, Hillfields, under the guidance of Angela Baxi, who will play the role of Soul Woman in the show which takes place in the ruins of Coventry Cathedral.

The group, who are aged between eight to 23, will be singing original compositions especially written for The Mysteries 2006 by composer Ilona Sekacz.

Soulful Gospel Choir will be the only choir performing live during the nightly performances from July 20 to August 5 at 8.30pm.

Coventry-based WorldSong, the choristers of Coventry Cathedral and a professional choir hired by Ilona, have recorded parts of the score which will be played during the production.

Angela, who has performed on 1Xtra FM and trained at the London College of Music, said the choir has been singing together since 2001.

“Soulful is a youth choir with people from all different cultures but when we come together we sing with one voice – like one big family,” she said.

The Mysteries 2006 are being supported by Oakmoor Deeley, the joint venture company behind the £130 million Belgrade Plaza development, which will bring a mix of bars, restaurants, hotels, apartments, a casino and a secure car-park to the city centre.

Kieran Leahy, from Oakmoor Deeley, said Belgrade Plaza remained committed to supporting Coventry Arts.

“I went along to one of Soulful’s rehearsals and it was great to see such enthusiasm and talent. The sound of the choir without any backing music was just incredible” he said.

Tickets for The Mysteries 2006, costing between £7.75 and £13, are available at the Belgrade Theatre box office on 024 7655 3055 or from the Coventry Cathedral Alcove Gift Shop.

As a promenade performance, there is only standing room available in the ruins and no general seating. Wheelchair spaces and seating areas for audience members with limited mobility can be booked in advance via the box office, subject to availability. Due to health and safety regulations, members of the audience cannot bring seating.
