Coventry get's first city centre four-star hotel in more than 50 years
City bosses are delighted with the news that Coventry is to get its first city centre four-star hotel in more than 50 years.

Radisson Edwardian Hotels has agreed a deal with developers Oakmoor Deeley to create a £40 million, 184-bedroom hotel at Belgrade Plaza.

The new hotel will also incorporate a fitness complex and 12,000 sq ft of conference and banqueting facilities.

The new hotel – which will open in 2008 – will be a key part of the £130 million development which is creating a new regional cultural, entertainment, leisure and living quarter in the heart of the city.

Radisson Edwardian has 11 hotels in London and one in Manchester but this will be its first venture in the Midlands.

Councillor Dave Arrowsmith, Cabinet Member for Urban Regeneration and Regional Planning said:

"This is fantastic news for Coventry and is proof that we have the pulling power to attract top quality names to the city. Over recent years the city centre has been transformed. A few years ago a company like Radisson wouldn’t have thought about coming here, let alone making us their first venture into the Midlands.

With Ikea, the Belgrade Theatre extension and the impressive Belgrade Plaza this part of the city centre will change beyond recognition and will offer something new for local people and visitors alike."

Liz Millett, Chief Executive, CV One said:

“The new Radisson marks a significant step in the continuing regeneration of the city and reflects the growing stature of Coventry as an attractive leisure destination and a city for international business.”

Peter Walters, Head of Economic Development CV One added:

"Radisson's decision to invest in the Belgrade Plaza project is a massive boost for Coventry.

The arrival of a truly top quality international hotel, right in the city centre, will raise our profile enormously as a centre for conferencing in this country and will have many spin-off benefits.

It's the best news since Ikea and is another piece in the jigsaw of a new Coventry that is now beginning to emerge."

Radisson's parent is Carlson Companies Inc. - one of the world's largest hospitality businesses turning over more than $22bn each year and operating in 140 countries.

Its investment follows the news that Gala is to open a 30,000 sq ft casino on the site and that Premier Travel Inns will operate a smaller 109 bedroom budget hotel.
