Topping Out
One of Coventry’s most eagerly anticipated new developments has reached new heights.

Councillor Ken Taylor, Leader of Coventry City Council, and Martin Yardley, Deputy Director of City Development, carried out a topping out ceremony on the second phase of Belgrade Plaza.

They were joined by Peter Deeley and Manoj Bhardwaj of developers Oakmoor Deeley to plant the traditional Yew Tree at the highest point of the latest phase of the scheme.

They congregated with several key partners in the £150 million scheme on the seventh floor of what will be the Premier Inn.

Cllr Taylor said: “This is a key project for Coventry and I am delighted to have been given the chance to carry out this traditional ceremony.

“Over the next 15 to 20 years the city centre will undergo an exciting and radical transformation and Belgrade Plaza is helping to highlight both the city's progress and aspirations. It will also help us to set a new standard for future developments to follow.

“It is bringing two major hotels to the city centre – something we crucially need – as well as a whole host of other occupiers that will provide something new for local people and visitors alike.”

Belgrade Plaza is creating a new culture, entertainment and leisure quarter for the city. As well as the Premier Inn, it will also feature a Radisson Edwardian hotel, Bella Italia, Metro Bar & Grill, Pizza Express, a Gala Casino and 64 apartments.

The 119-bedroom Premier Inn is set for completion in March of next year while the Belgrade Plaza development is expected to be complete by 2010.

Peter Deeley, of Oakmoor Deeley, said: "Work is moving on quickly and we are very pleased with the progress.

“It was only back in March when we discovered a World War II bomb on-site and were just preparing the foundations for this building.

“Now, just a few months on, the building is at its highest point and we are on course for completion of this phase in March

“We are very grateful for the support of all our partners at Belgrade Plaza and realise they importance of the scheme for the whole city."

A topping out ceremony is a traditional act when a new building reaches its highest point. A Yew tree is planted to ward off evil spirits from the development.

The sapling will be donated to Wappenbury Church.

Shortland Horne and Wright Silverwood are the agents for the scheme.
